Change versus Drift

What is the difference between change and drift in a spiritual sense? Change is inevitable, however when change becomes a compromise of Biblical, moral or spiritual standards, it becomes a drift. As a boat without an anchor will drift without one noticing it, so will a person drift away from the truth unless one holds on to the Biblical standard of the truth. It will take a Holy Spirit led life to know the difference. This can happen over generations almost without realizing it.  Drift usually happens under the guise of changing times, wherefore is not considered to be bad. Man’s tendency is to try to change the gospel to fit their lifestyle and desires, instead of changing their lives to fit into the gospel. Once man has adopted that mind set of change, the truth becomes obscure and drift inevitable. For God’s people it will take spiritual vision and strength to stand against a drift, while much of Christianity around is following popular trends.

Areas of drift from the Biblical truth which many have labeled as change are: divorce and remarriage, the man and woman’s roll in God’s order, the woman’s prayer covering, not wearing of the beard, separation from the world, non-resistance, the Lord’s Day of rest, conspiracy theories, worldly entertainment, lack of child teaching and discipline, immodesty, moral purity, alternative lifestyles, abortion, and truthfulness and honesty, are just some areas where this has happened. Many people feel they are entitled to their rights and the way they feel.

In God’s Holy Word He has laid out principles, if followed with a spiritual understanding, will secure the truth for the following generations. It is quite easy to allow small changes to come in, which at the time, may not seem like a big problem. There may be some of them that seem to enhance the gospel, yet subtlety are a compromise.

One would be tempted to focus their attention on the love of Jesus, feeling like that is enough, and one needs little to no change to live a Christian life and be saved. In the day that we live, it will take Holy Spirit inspired vision to maintain the truth for the coming generations. Satan would like to slowly, little by little, to cause us to question our faith, and make small compromises along the way. I am not implying that we hold on to empty traditions which are based solely in keeping a way of life, but traditions which promote Christian life and spiritual standards. Some may argue this and say it is controversial. Yet, already back in the Old Testament God had set an order in place for the children of Israel to follow. God never intended that His children would only change the heart and it not be visible on the outside. Otherwise, Paul would not have taught us about separation from the world.

Separation from the world is the demarcation of the true Christian.

15  I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. John 17:15-16

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

2 Corinthians 6:17-18

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. 2Th 2:15
