Fragrance of God

Have you ever wondered how God can be everywhere all the time? Sometimes I think about how God reaches out to men and women, boys, and girls, all over the world at the same time, calling, comforting, and saving them, and my mind almost stops; I cannot comprehend it. He is one being, yet his presence is everywhere all the time. His greatness and capabilities are beyond the bounds of our human understanding. However, though his ways are difficult to grasp, by faith I believe, because I have experienced his personal love for me. The awesome magnitude of our great God is beyond our imaginations.

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! Romans 11:33 KJV

We sing songs and talk about how God holds the earth in the palm of his hands and similar analogies. The thought came to me that instead of picturing God as a Holy Being traveling to and fro over the earth, that his love and presence are more like a blanket covering the earth everywhere all the time. Like an invisible cloud surrounding the earth, enveloping everything and everyone. We could also compare God’s love to a fragrance filling the earth. If his presence is like a fragrance, then by opening the windows and doors of our hearts, his fragrance will come in and fill our lives, permeating everything we do and say. When I think of the love and spirit of God in this manner, although it is still beyond my human understanding, it helps me comprehend how his abiding presence is able to hear the human cry, in every soul at the same time, no matter how small it may be.

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Proverbs 15:3 KJV

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Hebrews 4:13 KJV

If we think of his love and spirit being like a cloud covering the earth, then it is up to me as an individual to open the doors and windows of my heart to let his presence come in. For those who love him, his abiding presence fills their heart and life with the sweet, refreshing fragrance of his love. For those who resist him, they remain cold, hungry, and bitter inside, seeking fulfillment in earthy pleasures and gain, but finding none.

God has placed a longing and a yearning for fulfilment and acceptance in the heart of every single person on the earth. This alone is evidence of God. Without this God given element in the human heart, there would be no motivation to seek for pleasure or God. This is the cry of the soul longing to be reunited with his or her maker.

We can also think of his presence as the rain, ready to water the soul of our hearts. For those who love him, they put a funnel of prayer up to the sky to catch all they can of God’s goodness. On the other hand, those who refuse it, hold their umbrellas of resistance to keep the showers of God’s blessing from reaching them; not knowing that it is the very thing that can make them who they really want to be.

Satan is sly and wants to offer us an imitation of the real fragrance from God much like cheap perfume which does not last, or smells too strong. This religious perfume lacks the quality of the real thing and has the strong smell of self-adulation and empty praise. So, it is when we accept piety and good works into our lives instead of the genuine faith which comes by the surrender of self and wholehearted acceptance of God’s will. This real fragrance cannot be hidden from others. In fact, it becomes the fragrance of God only when it flows out of the believer’s heart and life. The apostles could not hide it. It says that the people took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus. When Peter denied Jesus, the people told him that his speech betrayed him. When our lives are in tune with the Masters, it will be known. If not, that is known also. The fragrance of God cannot be hidden. A man once spoke to my father on the phone. The man said, that by my father’s speech, he knew he was a Christian, even without seeing him in person. I believe it was the Holy Spirit who witnessed to him, that my father belonged to the people of God.

And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Matthew 26:73 KJV

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 KJV

Oh, to be filled with the fragrance of God’s love. May we throw open the doors and windows of our hearts to let the fragrance of God come in.
